BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE

Health locus of control (HLOC) is the perceived control over health outcomes. People who feel they can control their health outcomes have an internal HLOC, and those who feel others are in control or responsible for their outcomes have an external HLOC. Chance HLOC indicates a belief that outcomes are determined by luck, fate, or chance (1).

The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships among chance HLOC, fear-avoidance, and pain experience in people with lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET).

People who feel they can control their health outcomes have an internal HLOC, and those who feel others are in control or responsible for their outcomes have an external HLOC.

Incorporating psychological interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, may be helpful, even though long-term effects on chronic pain are still being investigated.

METHODS

  • 59 participants with LET completed the Patient-Specific Functional Scale, numeric pain-rating scale, Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire-2, Central Sensitization Inventory Control -C, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.
