BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE

Femoroacetabular (“hip”) impingement syndrome is a clinical condition defined by the presence of hip pain, limited internal rotation (IR) of the hip, and radiographic evidence of cam morphology in the hip joint. Previous research has found an association between cam morphology and the future development of hip osteoarthritis (OA).

This prospective study sought to determine the association between hip impingement syndrome and future hip OA.

Diagnosis of hip impingement syndrome should not be made solely on the basis of radiographic evidence of cam morphology but should also include hip pain and limitations in hip internal rotation.
