Long-term follow-up of patients with acute posterior cruciate ligament injury treated non-operatively with a physiotherapy-led exercise and support brace intervention
Key Points
- Patients that sustain a PCL injury treated with PCL bracing and an exercise protocol have a good chance of managing their PCL injury non-surgically.
All key points available for members only
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
While extensive resources have been established for both surgical and non-surgical management of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, few studies and protocols are available for the management of acute posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries.
The goal of this study was to evaluate 5-year patient-reported outcomes after physiotherapy-led exercise and support brace intervention in patients with acute PCL injury. The secondary goal was to report the conversion of patients that went on to get PCL reconstruction over 5 years post injury.
Few studies and protocols are available for the management of acute posterior cruciate ligament injuries.
That there is growing evidence to include PCL bracing (especially for high-grade tears) and exercise-based treatment as key ingredients for the successful non-surgical management of these injuries.
METHODS
- Participants were recruited from a previous study cohort from Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark from June 15-January 2018 who recruited patients diagnosed with an isolated PCL injury and multi-ligament PCL injury diagnosed by an MRI and clinical exam.
