All key points available for members only
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a very common issue, leading to increasing rates of disability worldwide (1,2). There have been many clinical practice guidelines published on the treatment of LBP (3,4), but currently, guidelines do not offer guidance on the type, duration, or intensity of exercise to reduce the risk of LBP (5).
The purpose of this study is to analyze data from a large sample of adults in the United States and provide guidance on the amount of aerobic physical activity and/or strengthening activities that should be recommended to lower the risk of developing CLBP.
Chronic low back pain is a very common issue, leading to increasing rates of disability worldwide.
Aerobic physical activity of greater than 75 minutes per week, and muscle strengthening activity up to four times per week resulted in a reduced risk of developing chronic low back pain.
METHODS
- This study was a cross-sectional analysis of de-identified data from 22 consecutive rounds of the U.S. National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).
