Differences in the thoracolumbar fascia between low back pain patients and healthy individuals: a systematic review with meta-analysis
Key Points
- Increased thickness and stiffness of the thoracolumbar fascia were correlated with low back pain.
All key points available for members only
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
Low back pain (LBP) is globally the leading cause of years lived with disability (1), yet most cases of low back pain are classified as “non-specific”, though there is a growing movement pushing to discontinue the use of that designation (2). Imaging does not always correlate with a person's pain, and standard imaging does not necessarily provide insight into the health or integrity of all tissues that may contribute to the presentation.
This systematic review compared imaging-based characteristics of the thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) in people with LBP and asymptomatic controls.
Low back pain is globally the leading cause of years lived with disability, yet most cases of low back pain are classified as “non-specific”.
There may be a day when it is possible to identify more specific diagnoses for low back pain. In the meantime, clinicians can continue to treat people with non-specific low back pain using the best evidence available.
METHODS
- This systematic review with meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered in the Open Science Framework database.
