BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE

Back pain continues to be responsible for the most years lived with disability and is responsible for over $40 billion globally in medical costs. Despite the huge social and financial costs, the negative impact of low back pain continues to grow (1).

Patient beliefs about their condition can influence the course of care and, ultimately, their outcomes (2). The aim of this scoping review of population-based studies was to search current evidence to understand the beliefs about back pain that have been studied in population-based studies and whether the beliefs could be considered misconceptions.

Inquiring about a patient’s beliefs about their back pain can offer valuable insights into how to set expectations, choose education, and present interventions in a way that will be meaningful and effective for patients with LBP.

METHODS

  • This scoping review’s protocol followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines and was registered on the Open Science Framework repository.
