Masterclass: running-related injuries - bringing evidence together for clinical decision-making
Key Points
- This masterclass described the epidemiology, etiology, prognosis, prevention, and management of running-related injuries (RRIs).
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
Running offers biopsychosocial health benefits but carries a risk of running-related injuries (RRIs). RRIs can be defined as lower-extremity musculoskeletal pain that affects training for ≥one week or three consecutive scheduled training sessions or requires medical attention (1). RRIs can lead to pain, healthcare spending, absenteeism, and running cessation and is more likely to occur in novice as opposed to recreational runners (2). Misconceptions about RRIs can undermine clinical decision-making.
This masterclass examined common assumptions and described the epidemiology, etiology, prognosis, prevention, and management of RRIs.
Running related injuries often emerge from the complex interactions of multiple risk factors, and clinicians should consider the interrelationships between risk factors holistically when attempting to prevent and treat these injuries.
METHODS
The authors synthesized evidence including systematic and umbrella reviews as well as individual prospective and cross-sectional studies (of epidemiology, etiology, and prognosis) and randomized controlled trials (of prevention and management).
