A systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the effectiveness of exercise training in people with osteoporosis or osteopenia compared to other rehabilitation interventions on fear of falling and the number of falls
Key Points
- Among older adults with osteopenia or osteoporosis, there is a shortage of effective strategies to reduce both the fear of falling and the number of falls.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
Osteopenia/osteoporosis, fear of falling and number of falls are major issues that affect millions of community-dwelling older adults. A previous meta-analysis demonstrated that balance training improves static and dynamic balance and falls efficacy (1). But the direct impact of other types of exercise interventions on fear of falling and the number of falls among older adults with osteopenia/osteoporosis have not been established.
The objective of this review was to systematically evaluate research on the efficacy of regular exercise training programs on how they impact fear of falling and number of falls among community-dwelling older adults with osteoporosis or osteopenia who live independently.
Ensure that patients have an exercise program or community program that they can do post discharge from physical therapy.
METHODS
