BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Nearly all (91%) of older adults are inadequately active, resulting in consequences such as falls, frailty, and functional decline (1). Understanding barriers and facilitators to physical activity is an essential component of developing interventions that capitalize on the facilitators and resolve physical activity barriers, resulting in improved likelihood of increasing older adults’ physical activity (1).

The objective of this review was to systematically review the literature for barriers and facilitators experienced by community-dwelling older adults engaging in physical activity.

Understanding barriers and facilitators to physical activity is an essential component of developing interventions that capitalize on the facilitators and resolve physical activity barriers.
