BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
Bone stress injuries (BSIs) caused by repetitive loading can lead to significant training and competition time loss, potentially affecting athletic performance (1). Although there has been increased attention on these injuries, there is still a lack of international consensus regarding their definitions, risk factors, and management strategies.
This study aimed to improve agreement on BSIs through a modified Delphi approach, focusing on three areas: (1) pathophysiology, diagnosis, terminology, and classification systems; (2) risk factors, screening, and prevention; and (3) management and return to sports.
Bone stress injuries caused by repetitive loading can lead to significant training and competition time loss, potentially affecting athletic performance.
Managing bone stress injuries requires a multifactorial approach, incorporating biological, mechanical, and behavioral factors to optimize recovery and reduce recurrence risk.
METHODS
- The study utilized a modified Delphi methodology to achieve consensus on BSIs.
