Physical activity and healthy ageing among older adults with chronic conditions: a cross-sectional study of functional ability and ageing perspectives
Key Points
- Higher physical activity was associated with better healthy ageing outcomes among older adults with chronic disease or functional vulnerability.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
Healthy aging is the process of developing and maintaining functional ability that supports well-being in older age, encompassing physical, cognitive, mental, social, and environmental dimensions. The World Health Organization emphasizes that healthy aging is shaped not only by disease status, but by the dynamic interaction between an individual’s intrinsic capacity and environment, underscoring the need for equity-focused, life-course approaches to improve quality of life for older adults. Physical activity is one of those life-course approaches. However, less is known about how physical activity can impact healthy aging among individuals who are already functionally vulnerable and/or have chronic conditions.
The objective of the study was to examine the association between physical activity and healthy aging among older Iranian adults with functional vulnerability and/or chronic conditions.
Higher self-reported physical activity was associated with better multidimensional healthy ageing scores and more positive ageing perspectives among older adults with chronic disease or functional vulnerability.
METHODS
Design: Descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study.
