BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

The negative impact of obesity, particularly with high waist-to-hip ratio, is associated with many negative health consequences (1). These health consequences are even greater among older adults (1). Although weight loss through caloric restriction is often considered as the primary intervention to overcome the negative health consequences that occur with obesity, it remains controversial in this group due to the associated loss of bone mineral density and increased risk of fragility fractures (2).

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of 12 months of weighted vest use during weight loss on bone health indicators with those of weight loss alone and weight loss combined with resistance training.

The findings suggest that exercise alone may be insufficient to address bone health during weight loss, underscoring the importance of exploring adjunctive approaches such as dietary modifications, pharmacological interventions, or other forms of exercise.
