BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) adopted three distinct mechanistic pain descriptors in 2017: Nociplastic, nociceptive, and neuropathic pain (1). Nociplastic pain is defined as “pain that arises from altered nociception” and is not fully explained by nociceptive or neuropathic pain mechanisms.
This paper was a summary of the discussions and debate on the term Nociplastic Pain from the European Pain Federation (EFIC) conference in Lyon on 26 April 2025.
Nociplastic pain is defined as “pain that arises from altered nociception” and is not fully explained by nociceptive or neuropathic pain mechanisms.
It is critical that practicing clinicians keep up with the terminology and evolving diagnostic criteria for the mechanisms of pain to ensure appropriate and timely care of our patients.
